I have read a LOT of books on the Revolution, in fact it is all I have read for years now, and so far (have not finished this yet), this is one of the best I have read! I was surprised to find that this book is more than just the title! I have not even gotten to the Battle yet! In fact, not even up to Lexington & Concord yet! The book takes you through all of what transpired leading up to the start of the Revolution. Of course, since this is a lot of territory to cover, a lot of details are missing, that I have read in other books, BUT, there have been many, many details that I have not seen in other books. Its like the author knows what most people (that do any reading on the subject at all) already know so he skips over those and adds details that he knows are not in a lot of other books. In addition, the writing style is excellent, very enjoyable to read. If you are a student of the Revolution, I heartily recommend this book!

I've read this book twice, the second time right before a vacation to Boston. I took the book, and had a religious experience at the Concord bridge as I read the bridge story on a bench next to the bridge. The wife and I also spent a day driving to the three Joseph Warren statues in the area - inspired by this book!I was disappointed that this book is NOT for sale at the Lexington and Bunker Hill gift shops.I follow this author. His Last Stand book went with me to Little Big Horn.

"Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution," by Nathaniel Philbrick, is a marvelous book that looks at the lead-up to and early stages of the American Revolution. It is well detailed. Most books covering this period of our American history cover the Battle of Concord and Lexington but stop short of including the Battle of Bunker Hill (which, incidentally, was fought in large part on Breed's Hill in Charlestown) and the subsequent siege of Boston. This history provides the full story and is a must read for any history buff. The main cast of characters are here ... Dr. Joseph Warren who was killed at Bunker Hill; Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, et. al. and their British adversaries. Of the many books on this period that I have read, this is one of the best because it includes the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston, which galvanized the patriots of New England into revolutionary action and ignited the "embers" into full revolution in places such as New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas.

I encountered great difficulty while reading this book. It was hard to get through, but not because it was poorly written or historically inaccurate. In fact, I found the prose so enticing that I was compelled to read most of the pages over again, just to soak in all the flavors. My wife asked why it was taking so long to read this book, and he only answer was that it is TOO GOOD to read just once. I didn't want it to end, and I discovered so many facts about Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill that I never knew. This book was painstakingly researched and should be made into a major motion picture. The characters are vibrantly brought to life, and the pages read like a sweeping novel. Get this book! A fantastic read!

This is a comprehensive history of the background of Bunker Hill and the aftereffects of that bloody battle. At the outset, it seems obligatory to note that the fight actually took place on Breed's Hill.The book itself considers the various actions leading to an army of militiamen to surround British forces in Boston. The French and Indian War is discussed (quite a few Yankee leaders had had combat experience then). So, too, laws passed by Great Britain to pay for the debt incurred by British forces in that war--leading to anger in the colonies, as they were taxed without representation. Incidents such as the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party inflamed passions all around--patriots, loyalist, and Great Britain. The conflicts between militia and Redcoats at Lexington and Concord led to an army of militia focusing on Boston.The book also spends considerable time outlining the key characters of the drama. On the British side, former Governor Hutchinson, Generals Thomas Gage, William Howe, and Henry Clinton were key players in the building of the drama culminating in Bunker Hill. On the patriot side, well known figures such as Sam Adams, John Adams, and John Hancock are discussed, So, too, a less well know figure, Joseph Warren. With the other three off at the Continental Congress, Warren played a leading role in organizing the patriots. Then, a much less wll known figure, a rabblerouser and trouble maker, who went by the nom de guerre of Joyce Junior. In fact, he was a part of one of the colony's most eminent families.After Bunker Hill, new figures became important--George Washington, taking command of the besieging forces at Boston, Henry Knox, who helped create an artillery arm for the army, and so on. The book does a nice job of describing the siege, Washington's battle within himself, the dramatic capture of Dorchester Heights, and the subsequent withdrawal of British forces from Boston.A wonderful resource for understanding the events and players leading up to the battle at Bunker Hill and what followed from that sanguinary event.

This review is specific to the Kindle version of the book.The textbook as intended is excellent. As many other readers have noted going back several years, the 1st edition of this book had an over abundance of typographical errors which have been corrected in more recent print versions. Amazon advertises the publication date for the Kindle version as April 7, 2015 but it contains all of the original typographical errors.When I purchased the Kindle version I knew about the typographical errors of the first edition and I also knew that the recent print editions had been corrected. I purchased the Kindle version as it had a very recent publication date and I was reasonably expecting that it would have been based on a corrected version of the text. I was really disappointed that this was not the case.While existing print copies of a book can't be updated, the same is not true for digital formats. Amazon has cheapened the Kindle brand by selling old versions of books and tagging them with recent publication dates.Amazon should be correcting the Kindle version and providing updated versions to all of the readers who have purchased faulty copies.

I am am a retired software engineer who spent my entire career working for an aero-space research company. I have a master's degree in mathematics including graduate level linear algebra. And yet, it took me years on the job to relate the books to the problems we were solving. Professor Klein does much of it with this book. For me, it is the perfect mix of abstract mathematics with real physical problems. I deeply regret not having it back then.

I rarely write book reviews but I am compelled to write one for Coding the Matrix. This book first caught my attention when a course by the same name was offered at Coursera. I did not enroll in the course but instead bought the book for self study at some stage. This year, I spent 5 months working through the problems in the book (I am down to the last 2 of the 14 chapters) and I just want to say that I really wish there was a book like this in bookstores 20 years ago. What a fantastic way to teach Linear Algebra!! Previously, I had tried working through Gilbert Strang's book and video lectures on Linear Algebra but the material never stuck in my head. This book is quite different in its approach because it spends a lot of time providing the intuition behind fundamental concepts. What is the intuition behind a Matrix? What is the "meaning" of Matrix multiplication? What really is a Vector Space? What is the relationship between a Matrix and a Function? The author goes about explaining these basic concepts using a combination of worked exercises and hands on Python implementations. After working through this book I am convinced that implementing Linear Algebra algorithms and applying them to real world problems is the most effective way to learn the subject.The hard copy book has several typos and errors but the Kindle version has been updated to fix most of these. Still, before you start, I suggest downloading the errata from the book's website just to be sure. The book has a short intro on Python which I thought was quite sufficient to tackle the programming exercises. This book requires real hard work if you want to get through it. Many times (especially in the Orthogonalization and Special Bases chapters) I found the going tough. But don't be discouraged - it is worth the effort. Now I really understand what QR factorization is about. SVD? No worries. The chapter on SVD starts with the absolute basics to explain how to derive the SVD formula and what the various component matrices really mean. I don't think I will ever see a A * A' multiplication in any other book without recollecting the beautiful explanation of orthonormal vectors from this book. The sad part for me is that I had to use all these concepts in the past working as a quant analyst at a bank, not knowing what these concepts really meant. So yeah, I wish it was published ages ago.Thank you Prof Klein for writing this book. The teaching technique you have employed for such a complicated topic is unique and effective. Looking forward to the next edition.

I found this book invaluable while taking the author's course Coding the Matrix on coursera.org. However, this first version was rushed to press with insufficient editing. It is rife with typos, some of which could mislead readers not already familiar with linear algebra. The index is both skimpy and inaccurate. Unless you currently need this book for a course, I recommend waiting for a corrected edition.

This book is takes a fairly unique approach to introducing linear algebra. Unlike a lot of linear algebra texts, it provides a large number of examples and applications using real world scenarios (error correcting codes, encryption, etc.) It is well written, with some humorous touches here and there. It uses Python to implement the algorithms, but these sections can easily be skipped if you just want to use the text as an intro to linear algebra.Another plus is that the Kindle edition is a print facsimile, which means mathematical expressions are rendered properly and at a size that is easily readable. This is an aggravating problem with most Kindle books for technical subjects. The only downside is that there is no index.There are a few curious errors: in one diagram the numeral 1 is consistently replaced by an exclamation point (!). In another diagram, the Greek letter theta is replaced in several spots by, again, an exclamation point. These issues do not, however, detract from the overall value of the book and I highly recommend it.

I'm only partially through this text, so please bear that in mind. With its presentation of applications, many tangents of historical interest, and 'interactive code exercises I find this to be one of the better presentations on Linear Algebra and Computer Science.It's been fun to compare Professor Klein's ideas along side Gilbert Strang's texts.Also I must give a high five to Prof Klein and all parties for their effort to keep this book affordable! In those two weeks alone, I not gained a better understanding of accounting, but I learned how to evaluate investments and make management decisions based on company finances.The book covers income statement analysis, balance sheet analysis, cash flow statement analysis, performance ratios, a bit of inventory management (like a financial intro to lean), and advanced capital expenditure analysis through concepts like discounted cash flow analysis.This book took me from feeling like I'd never understand certain things, to being able to discuss finance like an executive manager.I'm not kidding either, the book dives straight in and explains everything in a no nonsense approach.Financial Intelligence acted like a learning springboard for me by providing a foundation for me to read deeper into finance.I 100% recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to being their finance studies.

Although I have an extensive background in Finance, I chose to read this book to brush up my basics to progress in my career. To be honest, this book is one of the best investments I've made. It is one of the most simplified versions of understanding the core of any business i.e. its financial statements. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to either learn the financial side of business or simply re-touch with the basics in their free time. Very well written and excellent examples throughout each chapter make it very interesting and relatable in the real world.

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field. I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....
