I ordered How to be a Gentleman (on Kindle) because I was becoming aware that, like society in general, I was beginning to forget my manners. In fact, coming from a rural, blue-collar Missouri family, I realized I might have been lacking a few niceties to begin with.John Bridges does an excellent job at making manners relative in the 21st century. He strives to include young gentlemen (dating, job interviews) and older gentlemen (trimming nose hair, etc.) in his exhortations to be thoughtful. I picked up a number of useful tips (including facing those seated when entering or exiting a row of patrons in theatre seating, so one's derriere does not parade in front of each patron's face). On a few I had to grin guiltily, such as "A gentleman never drinks directly from a milk carton, even when the gentleman lives alone."There has always been a difference of opinion in defining "lady" and "gentleman." Ocassionally Bridges does seem to lapse into the uppercrust mindset that a gentleman, rather than being "any male who wishes to act thoughtfully," is defined as "any male who wishes to act thoughtfully, makes over $100,000 a year and is able and willing to spend thousands of dollars year on clothes, entertaining and tipping. Still, one can quickly skip over segments that he is sure will never apply to him. (As someone who winces when he pays $8 for a fast food meal and has probably had the equivalent of one large glass of (very cheap) wine in his life, I'll just google "how much to tip a wine steward" should the need ever arise!)Overall it is a very helpful, thoughtful book. I strongly recommend it, as any gentleman would.

Acting with manners demonstrates respect to your host and speaks volumes of you as a person. Being a gentleman doesn't mean being rich in material wealth but rich in putting others ahead of yourself.It is simply written. Very easy to follow. The book will fit easily in your satchel.

My son just graduated Drexel University and has requested that I purchase this for him for Christmas and when I did and it arrived, i couldn't believe that this book wasn't flying off the shelf. Good manners are important. It is important to have class in life. As society continues to change, there still needs to be individuals that understand the role of the gentleman in life. I have never been one to have excelled in this area, but as I continue to age, I thought I better do some work on myself. I was not really sure what to read, so I looked on Amazon, and this book seemed pretty good, so I got it. And I liked it. It is a pretty easy read, nice and short, and to the point. It covers the majority of the events and situations you will face and life, and some that you might never, like meeting the president. Overall the book will tell you how to attend a fancy dinner, cell phone usages or lack there of, how to dress, and there are a thousand different pieces of advice. There is advice on how to work a crowd, and it provides good opening lines. There is advice on topics that are rarely addressed like the process of introductions. Here is some wisdom. "A younger person is always introduced to an older person. For example, when Larry Lyons, who is in his twenties, is introduced to Mr. Allgood, who is in his fifties, a gentleman says, “Mr. Allgood, I’d like you to meet Larry Lyons.” Even if a younger woman is being introduced to any older man, a gentleman makes sure to say the older person’s name first." There is good advice on the use of the internet or email in social engagements. You never cancel online, but rather, you call because this is classy, and not being a coward. Here is the rule. Unless he has absolutely no other alternative, a gentleman never breaks a date by leaving a voice-mail message or via e-mail. Unless he must cancel because of a last-minute emergency, he considers such behavior the coward’s way out." There is even good advice on treating one another well. I like these lines. A gentleman takes care not to critique a friend’s behavior too frequently, lest the friend feel that he is being constantly scrutinized. Ultimately, he knows that a good friend—even one with more than a few foibles—is to be treasured, not tormented."If you are looking for a quick, one stop gentlemen rule book, this is a good one. It is brief, goes to the point quickly, and covers almost every situation you can think of. It is probably something that all men should brush up on in life.

Roger Zelazny (1937-1995) was a wizard of the pen: he won six Hugos and three Nebulas and is revered by science fiction and fantasy readers. Lord Demon is his last novel, the second of two projects unfinished at his death. Jane Lindskold, his partner and a fantasy author herself, completed it from some manuscript, a few notes, and conversations she'd had with him. Fans are often skeptical of posthumous collaborations: "It's not real Zelazny"--but Lord Demon comes darned close. It deserves space beside the Amber series, The Dream Master, and Lord of Light. Zelazny left two novel manuscripts unfinished when he died in 1995. One was Donnerjack, which Lindskold (Brother to Dragons, etc.) completed for 1998 publication. This is the second. Zelazny is best known for characters who, in between waging interdimensional battles and building planets, still have time to be very human. Lord Demon, also called Kai Wren, and sometimes Godslayer, follows that familiar model. Once the greatest of his kind, Kai, along with the other demons, was banished from their homeland 5000 years ago by the gods. The demons found a way to Earth, specifically China, where they rebuilt their lives. For the last few millennia, Kai has withdrawn from demon society, focused on constructing splendid magical bottles infused with his chi. Now his human servant and best friend has been murdered. Assuming the crime is merely one born of an old grudge, Kai doesn't take it too seriously. That is, until he's betrayed and stripped of his ability to manipulate chi energyAreducing him to the merely human in a new war among demonkind. Fighting back means dangerous alliances and sticking his neck out as he hasn't done for thousands of years. Most dangerous of all, however, is the possibility that Kai is just a pawn in a plot that passed him by years ago. Though the novel is slow to get moving, once the fight is on, it doesn't let up. The narrative weaves a fine line between tragedy and humor, sometimes slapstick, as Kai gathers a ragtag band of Chinese sorcerers and shape changers and Pekinese dogs. Lindskold effectively captures the voices of Zelazny's wise-cracking characters and continues the expert blending of magical and mundane that makes his work so enjoyable. Though I have been an investor / swing trader in stocks and options over the last 10+ years, I recently left the corporate world and am attempting to day-trade futures full time as my primary source of income. I am completely new to trading in the futures markets and have been recently investigating different futures philosophies and trading systems available. I was baffled by much of what I read in books others had recommended I read (I was unable to take what I had read and put it into action). Further, I was not trusting of much of what I found on the internet to be over-hyped systems promising almost guaranteed fortunes. But, I then stumbled onto Mr. Gutmann's book on a search on Amazon and was really glad I did. Mr. Gutmann's system is one of taking what information the market is providing to you on a daily basis in combination with other key indicators and price levels and anticipating market moves by identifying pattern set-ups resulting in high probability trades. Also very key is the chapter on trade management which provides great insights on fading out of a multi-contract position to move to a no-loss position in the hopes of letting a winner run. I have been very pleased with this book providing a framework approach to trading the Futures Markets and the ability I am gaining in understanding the "auction process" and how to interpret what the market is signaling to you (and knowing where to look and what to look for to get those signals).Mr. Gutmann also offers his technical indicators to you for a mere $200 that you can run in Tradestation that are key to visualizing the key price levels and market internals to trade with that are emphasized in the book. Once I purchased the indicators, Mr. Gutmann put me on his email list and sends out multiple emails each week in which he shares what trades he has made during the day / week and to re-emphasize much of the setups in the book (FYI, inter-market divergences are just one of the many key things you will learn to keep an eye on - but you'll have to read the book to understand the leaders and followers). When I bought the indicators I was new to Tradestation and had some issues in setup, Mr. Gutmann responded expeditiously after I sent an email to him and he called me right away and walked me through the setup. I find Mr. Gutmann to be a very solid ethical and conscientious individual who is dedicated to sharing his ever-evolving knowledge in trading the E-Mini markets and I value his knowledge/experience very much. Mr. Gutmann is a real futures day-trader doing it for a living and uses what he shares in his book. I believe you will get a lot out of this book, no matter your knowledge level. I have recommended it to my trading friends.

I have read both editions of this book and found them to be an excellent source of every-day-reference for trading S&P E-Mini. The real value is observed after reading the text multiple times and applying it to daily trading. Personally I think I would be completely lost if several independent tools are not available to "weigh" the market before setting up each trade. The content of this just provides that; analyzing the market from an objective perspective without a bias at all. The information included provides you with fundamentals of trading in a simplified manner. I read the books as if I had to take an exam on the subject...just like I did in my engineering college! No back testing has been done on the methodologies, however, the market brings unique scenarios every day and thus being cognizant of the moment is equally important, in my humble opinion, than isolating a situation and modeling it for perfection. The software (sold separately for a nominal price) serves as icing on this wonderful writing. I can't even fathom to trade in absence of powerful tools which are part of this "medium-tech" yet "high-concept" software. I have read several books on the subject but this has attained status of a permanent reference in my library.

I purchased two years ago and have come back to this book. Everything in this book is insightful and applicable to trading the index futures. Everything you need to build a methodology is in this book. Two thumbs up. You don't need much more than this book to really get going.

This is the second edition of the book, that seems to incorporate complementary ideas to the first edition.I really liked it, since it gives very detailed explanation of how anticipating where the market may react in your favor and positioning there before price hits that price, can give you an edge of entering with a small risk, that is part of a good capital preservation defensive plan of trading. I bought the book since I use that kind of trading and also I was able to view inside the book and noticed that it uses very few technical indicators, which are late in giving you signals and expose you to bigger loses than if you anticipate price turns with very tight stop loss.By the way, in order to enjoy the book, you can go to his website and there you will find all the charts of the book, something that I discovered early when I read the last pages and noticed that.The author uses a couple of indicators that he sells for a very low price in his website also, but they work only for Tradestation. One of the indicators is based on price, to give you an idea of overbought and oversold conditions. The other is related to the use of market internals and how he interprets that information to determine if the market is trending or ranging. In my opinion, if you have access to market internals, it is not necessary to use this indicator, once you understand the concept of what he does, but as an Engineer that he is, he has devised a clever way to let the chart tell you what condition the market is, without major doubt.The author has made a big effort to explain with great detail his price patterns and setups, but it will take some time to digest all the information contained in the book, that for me is the book I would have liked to have available in my early years of looking for the Holy Grail, since I started as most.. using technical indicators to evolve now to use none and base my trading in anticipating levels of reaction and watching how the market behaves there.It is a good book, once you clean your charts and start looking for what he teaches, you will start finding low risk points of entry in your charts, with the potential of catching some runners.

About the Author

Anthony J. Wheeler received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1971. Dr. Wheeler is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Engineering at San Francisco State University where he taught courses in Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, and lectures and laboratories in Experimental Methods. His development activities in laboratories in experimentation were the precursors to the present textbook.

 

Professor Ahmad R. Ganji received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979. He is a professional engineer in the State of California. He has served as a faculty member at San Francisco State University since 1987, teaching courses in the areas of thermal-fluids, experimentation, and air pollution, and publishing over 40 works. Dr. Ganji has been the director of Industrial Assessment Center–a US DOE sponsored project since 1992. In this capacity he has managed hundreds of energy assessments of manufacturing facilities. As a consultant in energy efficiency projects, he has directed and managed numerous measurement and verification (M&V) projects that involve the formulation of detailed measurement protocols based on national and international standards.

After purchasing this book based on title and author alone over 5 years ago, I finally opened it up several weeks ago and steadily plowed through it, piece by piece, any free opportunity I had. I have never been so appreciative of an author's efforts as I am with Greg Graffin and Anarchy Evolution.Growing up a punk rock kid in high school, Bad Religion was and remains one of my favorite musical groups. The depth and intelligence of their lyrics, their hauntingly beautiful harmonies, and their stalwart dedication to improvement of their craft and society is a combination rarely found in any musical genre, and I credit their songs with advancing my views of social and environmental justice.The beauty of what Graffin does in this book is difficult to put into words. It offers something for everyone who is a fan of his work, and plenty for those who have never listened to a measure of "Suffer," let alone suffered a broken nose in the pit while stomping around to "Generator." Knowledge of Bad Religion and their songs is not a prerequisite for appreciating this book, but it certainly enhances the experience.I expected this to be a critique of static institutions and the status quo, but it is far more. Graffin seamlessly weaves between autobiographical anecdotes, evolutionary biology, contemporary philosplophy, and creates a manifesto of his naturalist worldview. He is confident in his opinions, yet leaves debate open in those areas where reasoned and rational views could differ. He does not shy away, however, from shutting down those perpectives based on fallacies, fairy tales, or misinformation.Rarely does one come across a book which offers so much in such a small volume. After reading it, I not only know much more about the foundation of one of the greatest bands ever created (had no idea Graffin went to middle school blocks away from where my parents did), but I also gained knowledge and insight on the origins of humans, the rainforests, and the universe itself. His strongest passages, in my mind, relate to how a naturalist perspective can enhance social institutions which are suffering from the negative consequences of religious faith-based reasoning. The concluding paragraphs of his chapter 5 on Tragedy as the Construction of a Worldview are emotional, heart-breaking and heart-mending, while presenting an irrefutable argument for dramatic and revolutionary changes to our justice system and how we apply and develop empathy. To present such cogent viewpoints alongside tales of punk rock mayhem, biological diversity, and ancient pre-history is a remarkable achievement.If you are looking at this page, Buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

I want to give it 5 stars since I found it enthralling and couldn't put it down... BUT... it's definitely not going to be that appealing to everyone. If you happen to love science and thinking about the philosophies that it impacts, as well as being a fan of this generation of punk music... you will probably LOVE this book. Greg is a very concise writer and has a very interesting, though sometimes jarring, way of linking in punk and cultural evolution with biological evolution. The autobiographical bits were fascinating as I grew up listening to these guys and reading their history was interesting, especially due to the way that Greg intertwined how his love of science and curiosity led to Bad Religion being what they are. As another review stated... it feels like reading two books in one: A review and critique of evolutionary science meshed with a biography of a punk band focused on it's singer. Well done and highly recommended if you like Bad Religion and take interest in science and the cultural impacts of both.

Here's how nerdy I am: My introduction to Greg Graffin and Bad Religion came through his doctoral dissertation, which I purchased from Graffin and got autographed. And then I read it. And it wasn't very good. Since then I've read a couple of other things that Graffin has written or co-written (Is Belief in God Good, Bad or Irrelevant?: A Professor And a Punk Rocker Discuss Science, Religion, Naturalism & Christianity), but nothing prepared me for just how damned GOOD "Anarchy" is.It must be said that the best parts of the book are the parts that only Graffin could have written--the autobiographical sections about his earlier childhood in Wisconsin, his transition to the California punk scene, his approach to music, and so forth. Much of what he write about evolutionary biology will be familiar, at least, to people who have taken some evolution classes or read books such as Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body (Vintage), and Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo. But he does have an interesting take on natural selection. Graffin makes it abundantly clear that his slightly unorthodox view of the importance of natural selection to overall evolutionary theory should give no aid and comfort to creationists (or their better-dressed cousins, Intelligent Design advocates). But he also wishes to show that science, maybe especially evolutionary biology, is still an active, lively field with vivid, animated debates...not about the fact of evolution, but about interesting details related to mechanisms.And Graffin's chapter specifically on atheism was interesting as well, mostly for its biographical elements. I appreciate what he says about preferring a more dialectical approach that encourages questions, versus the more confrontational approach assumed by "New Atheists" in books such as God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,The God Delusion,Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon, and The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason. He makes an interesting and appealing case, but I'm still left thinking there is room for both diplomatic discussion and spirited debate. After all, the New Atheist books listed probably created a much larger space for the more nuanced and sophisticated conversation even to take place in.I see this book finding its most natural audience among Bad Religion fans (and I don't know how intentional this might have been, but it's easy to see some cross-currents betwee Anarchy and Bad Religion's new album release, The Dissent of Man) and younger people--say high school age--interested in science, the arts, and their relationship to each other. Also fans of flipping off authority--a Graffin staple, and a real strength of both his musical and, it would seem, his scientific careers.
